My Immigration Story:

I am Irish, Italian, German and Hungarian. My maternal grandfather’s family immigrated from Sicily, my maternal grandmother immigrated from Hungary, my paternal grandparents are native to Philadelphia, but sometime long ago their ancestors immigrated from Ireland. My wife’s family immigrated from Italy. I grew up immersed in immigrants in Wildwood, NJ. We had the local ethnic staples of Irish, Italian, and German, but we also had a large Greek community and our seasonal workers came from Ireland, and later from Russia and Belarus. During my time working with the Central American Refugee Center in Houston we worked with clients from Central America, South America, and Mexico who were fleeing the violence and poverty in their home countries and trying to gain a safe place in the U.S. for their families. I have always been drawn to and inspired by the immigrant experience and the courage that my grandparents and my clients have shown trying to make a place in the U.S. for themselves and their families.
